Cryptocurrency has a place to exist and can be used as a means of payment, Russian President Vladimir Putin believes. In an interview with the American TV channel CNBC, published on the website of the Kremlin, he said that in the future digital assets may begin to be used as a means of accumulation.

“Contracts in cryptocurrency? It’s too early to talk about it yet… To transfer funds from one place to another yes, but to trade, especially to trade energy resources, in my opinion, it’s still premature,” Putin said.

He added that he does not believe that the cryptocurrency is worthless. The Russian president pointed out that digital assets require a lot of energy to produce, which requires the use of hydrocarbons.

Putin agreed that people like Tesla and SpaceX head Ilon Musk are important for the development of cryptocurrency payments. In February this year, Tesla bought $1.5 billion worth of bitcoins and temporarily added the ability to buy electric cars for cryptocurrency.
